Can Dogs and Cats Spread Bedbugs?

With the bedbug epidemic rising out of control, it's prominent to consider what role pets play in attracting and distributing bedbugs. Can bedbugs bite your dog or cat? Can pets vehicle bedbugs from the yard? Are homes with pets more prone to bedbug infestations and more unyielding to treatment?

The good news is that bedbugs aren't interested in pet food or pet waste. They only want blood, and they strongly prefer to bite humans because it's difficult for them to passage fluid through fur. The bad news is that Any warm blooded animal living in your home can act as a magnet to lure bedbugs out of hiding and disperse them to areas they usually wouldn't go.

Wood Headboards

The steps you take to protect your bedroom against infestation will approximately actually drive bedbugs to other areas of your home in hunt of food. Factors such as body heat and pheromones will guide bedbugs to areas where pets congregate and relax. That's bad news for you and good news for your local pest control operator. The divergence between treating one room and treating multiple rooms can equal thousands of dollars. In the end, it doesn't actually matter if a bedbug has trouble biting your dog or cat. The worst part is that it left your bedroom to find someone else host and could possibly lay eggs elsewhere.

Can Dogs and Cats Spread Bedbugs?

Make no mistake. Bedbugs can and will feed upon animals if human counterparts are unreachable due to factors such as pesticides and bed safety measures. Pets who display scabs or bald spots from flea and mite irritations are all the more susceptible to bedbug bites. The most vulnerable place on a dog's body is the belly because it's not as furry as other body parts, and it often comes in touch with the ground. A bedbug can hitch a ride from the yard to your home using your dog's exposed skin as a vehicle, but this is a very small concern because bedbugs only stay on their hosts long sufficient to feed. It's far more likely for pets to vehicle bedbugs within the home.

Most pesticides designed to kill and repel bedbugs aren't safe for use on or near animals. The grand irregularity is cedar oil. When applied to human or pet quarters, it kills bedbugs on touch and creates a continuing barrier that repels a wide variety of insects, together with fleas, ticks, lice and mites. For these reasons, cedar oil is fast becoming the pesticide of option for major hotels. Last year, one of the most prominent pest control clubs in the United States ordered 5,000 gallons of the substance.

The following guide was industrialized to address the extra needs of pet owners who wish to stop the cycle of attraction and disbursement. With proper concentration to detail, it's potential to save thousands of dollars in extermination costs.

Don't stop following the rules just because you no longer see bugs or touch bites. A well fed bedbug can live up to six months, while a dormant bedbug can survive up to 18 months without a blood meal. A female bedbug can lay 5 eggs per day and 500 in her lifetime. An organized plan of action is indispensable for pet owners who wish to comprise infestations before they magnify exponentially.

Some Dos and Don'ts for Eradicating Bedbugs in Homes with Pets:

1.) Don't use pyrethrum or pyrethrin sprays on mattresses, pet beds or couches. According to an Epa observe of poison control centers, they cause more insecticide poisoning incidents than any other pesticides except for organophospates. Read labels thought about before selecting any do-it-yourself product.

2.) Do limit the areas where pets sleep. The proximity of some unconscious bodies lounging colse to the house is a recipe for attraction and disbursement. Crate pets at night, or set aside a well-protected area for animals to sleep. Spray pet beds with cedar oil and refresh the medicine every few weeks. Discard old pet beds that have become infested or wash them in the hottest water available.

3.) Don't trust in former flea treatments to prevent bedbugs from latching onto animals. They aren't effective against bedbugs, and they can be quite dangerous. According to a 2010 statement from the Environmental safety Agency, products intended to treat cats and dogs for fleas kill hundreds of pets each year. In a national Abc news article released in 2008, spot drop flea and tick medicines were found to cause more than 44,000 severe reactions, together with seizures and 1,200 deaths.

4.) Do spray an even mist of cedar oil over the carpeting underneath your bed. Refresh the medicine once a month to protect pets that enjoy relaxing under beds and stop the cycle of attraction to your sleeping quarters.

5.) Do play detective, especially near areas where pets and humans sleep. Lift carpeting edges, remove moldings and study the seams where ceilings and walls meet. Ask yourself where you'd hide if you were a bedbug with the desire to live near your sleeping host. Would you slip behind a photograph frame hanging above your host's bed? Would you crawl inside a pet toy, scratching post or pet bed? Spray any object that seems overly suspicious, even if you don't find bugs.

6.) Do spray Both sides of your mattress with cedar oil. Don't forget to remove the fine mesh cobweb netting that covers the underside of most box spring units. Spray this area liberally to kill bugs hiding within the bed cavity.

7.) Do use zippered mattress and box spring covers to prevent hereafter infestation. Pick a durable waterproof mattress encasement with a sturdy zipper. Apply duct tape over the tiny gaps where zippers open and close. Remember that bedbug nymphs are barely illustrated to the naked eye. They can actually perforate zipper clasps.

8.) Do protect bed legs, bed frames and headboards. Since bedbugs can't jump or fly, they are most likely to reach you by crawling up furniture. Spray bed legs with cedar oil or cover them with double sided tape. Refresh the tape when it appears dusty or no longer feels sticky. consider exchanging your wooden headboard for a sleek metal found without cracks and crevices.

9.) Don't allow pets into your newly protected bed. If your emotional attachment is too strong to consider sleeping alone, apply cedar oil to your pets before allowing them to sleep with you.

10.) Don't begin sleeping in other areas of the house! Bedbugs will plainly leave your bedroom in hunt of a warm body. The infestation will fast spread to other rooms.

11.) Don't forget to spray baseboards and curtain hems that touch the floor. This will prevent bedbugs from crawling up the wall and over the ceiling where they can parachute onto the mattress.

12.) Do vacuum thoroughly and discard the vacuum bag to prevent bedbugs from escaping.

13.) Do wash linens and bedclothes in the hottest water available. Store clean blankets and pajamas in giant Ziplock bags. Change into fresh clothing every time you get into bed. A bedbug can actually hitch a ride from your couch to your bed using your favorite robe as a vehicle.

14.) Do spray couches and easy chairs, paying extra concentration to crevices and upholstery wells. If you're inescapable that the living room is infested, remove the fine mesh cobweb netting on the underside of your couch to gain access to the spring area. Spray this area liberally to kill bedbugs hiding within the sofa cavity.

15.) Do buy smaller blankets that won't hang over the sides of your bed. Bedbugs are known to latch onto blanket corners that touch the floor.

16.) Do move your bed six inches away from the wall or nightstand. Any part of your bed that touches a piece of furniture becomes an open pathway for crawling bugs.

17.) Do spray inside drawers, especially those nearest your bed. Pay extra concentration to cracks, seams and beveled edges.

How to pick a Bed Frame

Picking out a bed frame is easy right? Well, Like anything, there are some good than others. Within the last year I bought a bed. 10 months later it collapses in the middle of the night driving me to sleep on the couch.

When I bought the bed frame I had assumed that it was not going to collapse, in fact the thought never even entered my mind. The problem was that because I was none too flush after buying a flat (or an apartment if you're not in the Uk) I needed a bed fast but didn't want to spend a fortune. So I bought a bed frame from one of the low cost high volume stores you find on the outskirts of every town. 10 months later, snap.

Wood Headboards

It turned out that a part of the headboard which linked by a screw to a inevitable part of the bed frame had come to be threaded. I managed to fix it with a incorporate of bolts and a drill. That is not the point though is it. It shouldn't have broke in the first place. So if you're still reading my spicy tale of suburbia then here is my list of things to look out for in order to buy a sturdy bed.

How to pick a Bed Frame

1)When your friend offers to get you a decent bed frame from man she knows who works in a bed installation making quality beds. Listen and then say yes. That one seems inevitable doesn't it.

2)When in the bed store don't be afraid to jump up on a bed to see how sturdy it feels. The bed you're jumping on won't be for sale as it will be a show bed so go nuts.

3)Look at how the frame fits together. If it is a few pieces of wood linked at distinct sections then there will be stress points that could give way down the line.

4)Keep in mind how high the frame is. Try lying on it and getting up as if you're getting out of bed in the morning. If you perceive one morning while getting up that the frame is too high its too late. Sorry to be dramatic but its true.

5)Don't worry about it finding good. That's what covers are for.

So if you corollary my five step plan you will have success. This success will not apply to the rest of your life any way its a good start.

How Do You Get Bed Bugs? How Are Bed Bugs Spread?

If you are wondering how do bed bugs get into your house and bedroom, read on to find out more about how they are spread and how to prevent infestations.

Bed bugs, scientifically known as cimex lectularius, are small parasitic insects that are regularly brown or black in color, in the size of an apple-seed. They regularly only come out at night and they primarily feed on the blood of humans when they are asleep.

Where Do Bed Bugs Live and Hide?

How Do You Get Bed Bugs? How Are Bed Bugs Spread?

Typically, as the name suggests, bed bugs live in mattresses, box springs or sometimes under the linens. While the day, they hide in cracks and crevices of beds, walls, headboards, bed frames and wooden floorboards. However, they can also be found in books, carpets and even phones - basically in any place that provides them with easy entrance to you while sleeping.

How Do Bed Bugs Spread and How Did They Infest My Home?

In the up-to-date years, surge in the spread of bedbugs has been attributed to the increase in international travel as well as a decrease in the use of potent pesticides such as Ddt (that helped mostly eradicated these pests from developed nations before it was banned in the 1970s to 1980s for environmental and health concerns.)

Bed bugs are efficient hitchhikers and often spread by hitching rides on people's clothing, luggage, beds and other furniture.

They also spread through mattresses. Reconditioned mattresses, which are refurbished old mattresses, often spread bedbugs into stores and homes, resulting in an infestation. In addition, bedbugs can spread when old and new mattresses are conveyable together. Bedbugs are able to spread through rooms and even apartments.

How Do I Know If My House and Bed Is Infested With Bed Bugs? Signs and Symptoms

Bedbugs are small, cryptic and agile and because of their diminutive size, they are rarely seen in performance by humans. The first signs of a bedbug infestation are regularly from the bites on your body by the bugs. Bedbug bites are commonly painless, although they can be itchy and cause a bed bug rash. The bites tend to start as swollen wheals, then moderately disappearing after a few days.

Besides the bites, there are other signs and symptoms that may indicated an infestation:

Small bloodstains from crushed bedbugs on bed sheets or other bed linen Detection of dark spots of the bug's excrement on bed or walls An offensive musty odor in the room or house when infestations are severe If you infer that there is an infestation, you should have a look at the crevices in walls and bed frames to be sure.

Tips to prevent and Keep Bed Bugs Out From My House and Bed?

Prevention is good than cure. It is less messy to take precautions against bedbugs than to get rid of them after an infestation.

You may take the following steps to prevent them from spreading in your homes and bedrooms:

Use a mattress cover - a plastic or tightly woven one, to prevent bedbugs from crawling in and out Seal and mend any cracks on your home's outside to prevent any insects from entering Clean your house regularly - sell out any unnecessary clutter and vacuum your mattresses If possible, do not buy or pick up any secondhand furniture

A Guide to Platform Bed Plans

Do you want to try your hand at building a platform bed? For those of you who don't yet know what a platform bed is, it's an exciting, old way of sleeping that incorporates a simple, elegant frame and a singular mattress. Its lines have been used in Europe, Scandinavia, and Japan for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Platform beds can be made of wood or metal. If you're finding to build a platform bed, you're probably thinking about wood.

Platform beds can be extremely simple. The extremely uncomplicated platform beds have no headboard or footboard, and indubitably no canopy. They concentrate slats, which, in effect, replace the need for a box spring, since, because they are sturdy yet somehow slightly flexible, retain the singular mattress on top. The corollary is that you get a good night's sleep, are very comfortable, and yet don't end up with back pains or numb muscles in the morning.

Wood Headboards

It's ever best for your back than sleeping on the floor. And now, with the rapid proliferation of memory foam, your platform bed can be even more comfortable and healthy. Memory foam is a gel-like polymer that accepts your shapes and bones, but supports it fully. (It was first used in hospitals, and is now a popular mattress and pillow material.)

A Guide to Platform Bed Plans

Platform bed plans can be more complicated too; you can add headboards, footboards, canopies, even extra flourishes and storehouse units. You can build the storehouse units as one with the bed frame, or you can create rolling drawers supported by castors, so that the drawers are modifiable and indubitably maneuverable throughout your bedroom.

It's not the most difficult job in the world for a handyperson. If you want to build a platform bed, you can order platform bed plans from any of a amount of plans retailers. Woodworking clubs, furniture enthusiast groups, and other organizations can give or sell you plans. You can also buy plans online.

How to Paint Distressed Wood effect on Furniture

If you have a piece of furniture which you want to turn into a piece with a distress wood effect, then you can result these steps here. Instead of buying an old which is a very old piece of furniture which may have signs of cracks and have issues with losing functionality, you can create a distressed look yourself. They look great in any decor which needs a touch of the elegant French or other European feel to add character to the room or home.

Here's how to create the distressed stop on wood furniture.

Wood Headboards

1. If the wood has been painted over previously, sand the wood lightly so that the new paint (later) to adhere properly.

How to Paint Distressed Wood effect on Furniture

2. Wear protection glasses before you begin, and fill an old pillowcase with nuts and bolts, and use this to pound areas of the wood to creates dents. You can create a small number or many areas of dents agreeing to the look that you want.

3. Use a chisel and gradually chisel away a few dents to the furniture on the surfaces as well as on some edges. Alternatively, you can use a hammer and lightly hit the wood with the edge of the hammer to create these indents. Don't overdo these dents, but create just enough to give you the look you want.

4. Apply a coat of paint to the whole piece and allow to dry. The color is up to you and many citizen use creams, beiges, and white, including the translucent finishes which will allow the character of the wood to show through.

5. Once dried, sand areas of the surface and edges with sandpaper to create areas of weathering on the wood agreeing to your preference. If you use fine paper, the result will be subtle, but if you use a rougher paper, then you can create some fine lines if you so wish.

6. Finally, apply a layer of wood stain or varnish. Just check with that this is compatible with the paint that you have used. Ask the store handyman devotee on paints and varnishes if you are unsure.

So as you can see, you can custom any of these steps to create the type and number of weathering and distress in the wood as suits the piece of furniture and your taste. Distressed stop on wood furniture can create a French romantic feel to your room or home, or a feel of European elegance, especially when combined with wall art. When you add these touches to your home, you can create a unique feel that will impress yourself and your guests.

Canopy Beds: Something gorgeous to Lie Over You

Add romance to your bedroom décor with a beautiful and luxurious canopy bed.
If you don't already own one, don't worry - you do Not need to buy a fancy
four-poster frame.

There are some methods you can use to generate the feel of a canopy, each of
which has a slightly dissimilar look. Make sure you read the whole description before
you start, as the distance of your material depends on what additions you settle
to make.

Wood Headboards

1. Curtain rods - don't worry - you won't see them. Attach two to the ceiling,
one on each side of the bed. As another option, you can add two more, one at
each end of the bed, perpendicular to the two original rods. This alternative
involves more work - or more expense - depending on how handy you are with a
needle because it requires curtains in tab-top, pinch-pleated, tie-top, or
gathered panel styles.

Canopy Beds: Something gorgeous to Lie Over You

2. Crown canopy or coronet - sounds and looks elegant. It requires a half-circle
of ¾" plywood that will go around the top of your bed, so when you lie down,
what you will see is the circle around your head and a wide opportunity about at
your chest, near the ceiling. The plywood can be attached directly to the
ceiling or can "float" using L-brackets that are attached to the wall. You will
require paneled fabric to hang from the wood.

3. Metal or wooden rings

a. One ring: Place it overtop of the head of your bed. Using one long piece of
fabric that reaches the ground on both sides, spread the cloth out or drape it
over your headboard

b. Two rings: Mount one ring on each side of the head of the bed and pull the
material straight through both rings, allowing it to droop, or swag in the middle.

c. Four rings: One ring at each angle of the bed. This one requires four pieces
of fabric. Two of them will go lengthwise over the bed and the other two will be
draped width-wise. This means each ring will have two pieces of cloth passing
through the hole. This choice gives a full canopy face to your bed. Ensure
that the cloth touches the floor at each side.

Fabrics that are usually used include silk, velvet, chintz, and tapestry.
However, you are not puny to these. If you would prefer a more country or
informal look agree gingham, muslin, calico, or even lace.

More Ideas for original Canopy Beds

If you're using metal or wooden rings, you can have some dissimilar lengths
of cloth to alternate and turn the appearance of the canopy by season or mood.
You can even select fabrics that match the sheets!

The distance of canopy is up to you. For easy cleaning, have the fabric just
touch the floor or hang an inch above it. If you want a more classic,
traditional look, allow 4 inches past the floor so that it has a "pooling"
affect.

Tiebacks: these can add elegance to any canopy arrangement. They also pull
fabric up off the floor - so ensure there is extra cloth when using tiebacks.
Examples include twisted cord, ribbons, and artistically fashioned beads.

Trim: coordinate with the tiebacks. These add color, texture, and body.

Lining: add fabric to the back of each panel in a matching print or solid
color since it will be graphic if you swag the material. This supplementary
material adds to the body of the canopy and makes it more durable.

The whole of work that you put in will reflect how absorbing your
original Diy canopy bed appears, but it may also be deceptive since some of
the styles want minimal work. Good luck!

The headboard itself looks great. The only flaw I could say is that after I attached it to my "metal" bedframe it still is not tight and solid. It moves too freely for me. Also there were no screws to use, I had to purchase those on my own. Now if you have a wooden bed frame maybe the headboard might fit tighter so it won't move as much. But overall I'm very happy with how the headboard looks and will solve the movement problem down the line.

This headboard is gorgeous. The finish is beautiful, the style is elegant, and it's just tall enough to be commanding without dominating the room. It isn't particularly sturdy, though. BUT that was easy to fix.
Be wary of the screws included. There are two sets of 4 screws that are almost identical, and silly me got them swapped. I put the longer ones on the bottom of the headboard itself, leaving the too-short ones to attach it to the bed frame. Also, if you do what I did, you risk the screws poking through. So follow the instructions carefully.
Anyway, I realized that even with the right screws, it wouldn't be very well attached to the frame. So, I purchased a couple small L-brackets and attached those to the posts and the bed frame. Et voila, it is perfect!
Be careful to use the right screws in the right places, and consider using L-brackets for added stability, but it's a beautiful headboard!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as Advertised, May 15, 2010
This review is from: South Shore Step One Collection Full / Queen 54/60-Inch Headboard, Black (Kitchen)
Looked great on the website and the price was good, but I had several disappointments with this item. The headboard did not have all of the necessary bolts, several of the outside facing pieces did not have vanier so I had to manualy paint them, many of the outward facing bolts did not come with caps to cover the bolts. Poor quality, poor workmanship, do not buy this item.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great little bed, September 27, 2008

This bed is great for the price, and the quality of the pieces. Assembly is easy, and the pieces fit better than any piece of pre fab furniture I've ever assembled. The mattress from your crib fits on the bed, so you don't have to get a new one. The height is perfect for little ones, they can get in themselves very easy. The side rails could be a little bit longer, they don't really keep the kid in bed that well, but overall it is a really good buy.

3.0 out of 5 stars broken underrails, June 18, 2010

This review is from: Dream On Me Classic Sleigh Toddler Bed, Cherry (Baby Product)
i got this bed for my 16 month old daughter to transition her from her crib. it was pretty easy to put together and seemed sturdy. i had this product for about a month when one night i went to go lay my daughter in bed and when i leaned my elbows on it to read her a story one of the small boards underneath that support it snapped. now im not overwieght or obese, so i was pretty confused at how easily it broke. i love the design of the bed but its support beams are not of the greatest material and im afriad this bed will not last long at all. i really suggest that if you decide to get it that you find a way to support the mattress better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dream on Me Toddler Bed - Espresso, June 17, 2011

After reading the reviews I kind of thought that some of the people who had trouble with assembly were just a little slow on reading directions. Having assembled a LOT of furniture myself, I would consider myself a pro at furniture assembly. About an hour in the assembly process I would have said that every one was crazy but one single screw cost me about 45 minutes. I also had the entire bed assembled only to find that I'd put two of the bottom support rails in upside down and would have to take the entire bed apart (none of the parts are labeled and like other people have said, it's hard to determine which piece is which in a few instances). I'd say that the misunderstanding was more my fault than anything else but if things were labeled properly, it wouldn't have been a problem. My only disappointment with the bed is that it is not the same color espresso as my other bedroom furniture (crib, night stand, and a cube system that all match). The wood is a little lighter than espresso... Read more
